The Centenary Anniversary Ceremony of Sport in Japan was held in the presence of the Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko, IOC President Count Jacques Rogge, OCA President Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, Mr. Tetsuro Fukuyama (Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary) and Mr. Yoshiaki Takagi (Minister for Education, Culture, Sport, Technology and Science). In his commemorative speech, Emperor Akihito touched upon the power of sport, which brought joy to the youth of Japan immediately after the World War II when the National Sports Festival was held in Kyoto as the rebuilding of Japan commenced in such difficult times.
HE Yoshiro Mori, the President of the Centenary Committee and the President of the Jigoro Kano Memorial International Sport Institute, declared a resolution on sport for the next centenary. Founded upon Jigoro Kano’s declared mission of 100 years ago during the foundation of the JASA and the JOC, HE Mori declared his intent to ensure “all people enjoy sport” and under the “Mission for Sport in the 21st Century”. Sport contributes to the development of a fair and rich welfare society, the creation of a lifestyle coexisting with nature and the establishment of peace and friendship.
